A MEMORIAL
DECLARING FEBRUARY 10, 2018 "NEW MEXICO ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT COUNCILS DAY" IN THE SENATE.
WHEREAS, established in 1950, the New Mexico association of student councils was founded by a group of educators who wanted to create an organization for student leaders to encourage practice of the democratic process, citizenship and service while fostering an exchange of ideas and problem-solving strategies in New Mexico schools; and
WHEREAS, student councils follow the principles for which the United States was founded and focus on active citizen participation; and
WHEREAS, many members of the New Mexico legislature began their public service careers as members of student councils; and
WHEREAS, the vision of the New Mexico association of student councils is to create the leaders of tomorrow, today, all in the spirit of serving, guiding and leading; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico association of student councils believes in the promotion of unity while respecting diversity of individuals; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico association of student councils encourages total involvement and participation though attendance in leadership training; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico association of student councils supports the ideals of service within New Mexico communities; and
WHEREAS, the practice of the democratic process preserves the equal voices of students and advisors by the election of association leaders as executive board members; and
WHEREAS, by being a part of the New Mexico association of student councils, students and advisors have opportunities to network with a wide variety of organizations, businesses and people from across the state and nation; and
WHEREAS, youth across the country and New Mexico want to play an active role in their futures; and
WHEREAS, active engagement is critical to democracy, and the United States of America's founding fathers were the model of an active citizenry; and
WHEREAS, on February 10, 2018, over one thousand young people and over one hundred fifty adult sponsors from across New Mexico will participate in the sixty-eighth New Mexico association of student councils conference in Bernalillo, New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated group of New Mexico organizations and sponsors have come together to support the sixty-eighth New Mexico association of student councils conference; and
WHEREAS, solutions to preserve New Mexico's rich traditions for future generations can be implemented through dedicated student engagement on student councils;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 10, 2018 be declared "New Mexico Association of Student Councils Day" in the senate; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the executive director of the New Mexico association of student councils.
