A MEMORIAL

HONORING REPRESENTATIVE JAMES E. SMITH AND RECOGNIZING HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, Representative James E. Smith, a Republican, will be retiring after serving four terms in the house of representatives; and

     WHEREAS, since 2011, Representative Smith has represented district 22, covering Bernalillo, Sandoval and Santa Fe counties; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Smith is a member of the appropriations and finance committee and the education committee; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Smith chaired the government, elections and Indian affairs committee from 2015 to 2016 and is a former member of the regulatory and public affairs committee as well as the voters and elections committee; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Smith graduated with a bachelor of science degree in wildlife management from Northwestern state university in 1977 and a bachelor of arts degree in secondary science education from the college of Santa Fe in 1996; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Smith is a former teacher who taught high school science and technology and who owns a computer consulting business; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Smith has been a tireless advocate for New Mexico's students and has worked on numerous efforts to support student achievement, increase parental involvement in education and increase funding for evidence-based early childhood education programs; and

     WHEREAS, one of Representative Smith's top priorities throughout his legislative career has been to develop a statewide broadband network to improve access for residents and businesses and to develop a workforce that attracts business to the state; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Smith has been a steadfast proponent of government transparency and accountability and has sponsored legislation to improve lobbyist reporting and increase voter access; and

     WHEREAS, in June 2017, Representative Smith was honored by New Mexico first with the spirit of bipartisanship award for being a leader who put good policy above partisan politics;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Representative James E. Smith be recognized for his dedication to the representation and well-being of the people of New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Representative James E. Smith.
