A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING AND HONORING THE UNITED WORLD COLLEGE-UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

     WHEREAS, the united world college-United States of America was originally founded in 1982 as the Armand Hammer united world college of the American west by industrialist and philanthropist Armand Hammer; and

     WHEREAS, the united world college-United States of America is a united world college located in Montezuma, New Mexico, at the edge of the Pecos wilderness; and

     WHEREAS, the campus includes the historic Montezuma castle; and

     WHEREAS, the united world college-United States of America is one of seventeen united world college campuses located on five continents; and

     WHEREAS, it is a two-year, independent, coeducational boarding school accredited by the independent schools association of the southwest, the international baccalaureate organization, united world college and the state; and

     WHEREAS, the student body is made up of about two hundred thirty students representing seventy to eighty countries at any time; and

     WHEREAS, students are between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years old, and a generous school endowment ensures that the school is one hundred percent free for all American students, and a majority of all students receive full or partial scholarships; and

     WHEREAS, students participate in a unique program that combines academic challenge with an experiential, hands-on approach to learning; and

     WHEREAS, the united world college-United States of America faculty and staff are not only experts in their respected fields, but they also share a commitment to the united world college mission and a belief in students who will carry it forward; and

     WHEREAS, the school's mission is to teach international understanding by bringing together young men and women of diverse ethnic and social backgrounds in an environment in which they work together for shared success; and

     WHEREAS, the united world college-United States of America distinguishes itself through its robust wilderness program, a strong program in the arts and a significant service program that cements the school's deep relationship with the local community of Las Vegas, New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the Bartos institute for constructive engagement of conflict was established in 2001 to help equip young people with the skills to identify and learn how to constructively engage conflicts at personal, interpersonal and larger community levels; and

     WHEREAS, students graduate with a full international baccalaureate diploma, one of the most respected secondary diplomas in the world; and

     WHEREAS, graduates are typically accepted at the most competitive colleges and universities around the world, and, in 2010, the united world college-United States of America was ranked a "top ten program" by the United States center for citizen diplomacy; and

     WHEREAS, throughout its history, the united world college-United States of America has attracted the support of passionate individuals, including the late honorary President Nelson Mandela and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the united world college-United States of America be recognized and honored for the school's significant contributions in providing quality education to students from New Mexico and around the world; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the united world college-United States of America.
