A MEMORIAL
DECLARING FEBRUARY 5, 2018 "NEW MEXICO TECH DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, New Mexico tech day is meant to increase awareness and garner support for education, innovation and research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the New Mexico institute of mining and technology, also known as New Mexico tech; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico celebrates innovation, education, research, science, technology, engineering and mathematics for their contributions to New Mexico's economy; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico calls upon its governing bodies to attract industry with high-paying jobs requiring science, technology, engineering and mathematics education; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico tech has long been a leader in science, technology and research, which rely on innovation from high-achieving undergraduate and graduate students; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico tech prepares students to contribute to the state and nation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, through innovation and research, leading to economic development; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico tech is rated number one nationwide among all universities in engineering and physics; rated number one among all public universities in computer science and physical sciences by College Factual; and rated one of the top three public universities in the west by U.S. News & World Report; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico tech has founded the center for leadership in technology commercialization, targeting partnerships with hands-on, in-house development of commercializable intellectual property leading to market-driven licensing and spinoff opportunities; and
WHEREAS, the legislature has shown its commitment to education and has identified science, technology, engineering and mathematics education as a priority;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 5, 2018 be declared "New Mexico Tech Day" in the house of representatives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, innovation and research that prepare students for high-paying jobs be supported by the state; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor and the president of the New Mexico institute of mining and technology.
