A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE RICH CULTURAL HISTORY OF ALBUQUERQUE'S SOUTH VALLEY AND DECLARING JANUARY 17, 2018 "SOUTH VALLEY DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, the residents of the South Valley maintain close ties to Albuquerque's Hispanic roots; and

     WHEREAS, the South Valley is home to some of the most historic communities in Bernalillo county; and

     WHEREAS, the rich, fertile valley has traditionally been a farming community, and it is still crisscrossed by irrigation ditches linked to the Rio Grande; and

     WHEREAS, the South Valley prides itself on the area's agricultural traditions; and

     WHEREAS, Rio Grande high school, South Valley academy and Atrisco heritage academy high school have joined together to honor their South Valley community and its culture, history and families; and

     WHEREAS, Rio Grande high school, South Valley academy and Atrisco heritage academy high school use the collaboration between the schools to address the needs of the South Valley community; and

     WHEREAS, Rio Grande high school, South Valley academy and Atrisco heritage academy high school have joined together to organize efforts to increase safety in the schools, to bring awareness of the importance of education and to further career opportunities; and

     WHEREAS, Rio Grande high school, South Valley academy and Atrisco heritage academy high school celebrate "Dia de Valle" by honoring the South Valley of Albuquerque and its cultural and historical importance;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the South Valley be honored and recognized for its unique contributions to New Mexico and that January 17, 2018 be declared "South Valley Day" in the house of representatives.
