A MEMORIAL
HONORING EDWARD C. SANDOVAL AND RECOGNIZING HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, Edward C. Sandoval, a democrat, served as a state representative for district 17, which encompasses the mid-north valley in Albuquerque, for thirty-two years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was first appointed to the New Mexico senate, representing senate district 13, on February 27, 1975, to replace Anthony Lucero, who resigned; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was sworn in on March 3, 1975, served a partial session in 1975 and a full session in 1976; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval ran for state representative in 1983, and represented district 17 for thirty-two years; and
WHEREAS, in February 2014, Mr. Sandoval announced that he would not seek reelection, and served his term through December 31, 2014; and
WHEREAS, at the time of his retirement, Mr. Sandoval was the chair of the house taxation and revenue committee and a member of the house voters and elections committee, which he chaired for more than twenty years; and
WHEREAS, during his legislative career, Mr. Sandoval was the chair of the revenue stabilization and tax policy committee, a member of the behavioral health subcommittee and a member of the committee on compacts; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was an advisory member of the disabilities concerns subcommittee, the transportation infrastructure revenue subcommittee, the legislative health and human services committee, the military and veterans' affairs committee and the New Mexico finance authority oversight committee; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval served as co-chair for two redistricting cycles and helped to establish a permanent health and human services committee; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was a long-time advocate for working families, mental health parity, patient protection and a fair tax policy; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was appreciative of the friendships he made during his political career and was proud to have served the people in district 17 for over thirty-two years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was very effective in representing his constituents and was involved in important legislating that addressed the needs of the less fortunate and the more vulnerable, those in the mental health community and people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval was especially proud of his involvement in securing one million five hundred thousand dollars ($1,500,000) for the new home of the north valley little league; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval devoted half of his life to his constituents and New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, at the time of his retirement, Mr. Sandoval stated that he wanted time to focus on his family and personal life; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sandoval has been a Saturday morning celebrity on KANW radio, where listeners from all over the world, who are on a first-name basis with him, call in and request their favorite New Mexico music, which Mr. Sandoval loves and promotes;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Edward C. Sandoval be honored for his years of public service and his dedication to the residents of New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Edward C. Sandoval.
