A MEMORIAL

DECLARING MARCH 14, 2017 "NEW MEXICO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" IN THE SENATE.

     WHEREAS, there are thousands of miles of road in New Mexico that are maintained by the department of transportation; and

     WHEREAS, there are active work zones every day throughout the state, where department of transportation employees work to improve the safety and quality of life of those traveling New Mexico roadways; and

     WHEREAS, the work is often dangerous, and each year, department of transportation employees risk their lives while working on New Mexico roads; and

     WHEREAS, each year, the workers who have lost their lives are remembered and honored; and

     WHEREAS, drivers, passengers and highway workers share the risks in work zones; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico must continue with efforts to heighten awareness and to encourage motorists to drive safely in work zones;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that March 14, 2017 be declared "New Mexico Department of Transportation Workers' Memorial Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation.
