A MEMORIAL

PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 11, 2016 "NORTHERN NEW MEXICO COLLEGE FOUNDATION DAY" IN THE SENATE.

     WHEREAS, in 1996, a group of visionaries in the Espanola valley and surrounding communities came together and created the northern New Mexico college foundation; and

     WHEREAS, the northern New Mexico college foundation was created to build a legacy of support for students pursuing a college degree in northern New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the northern New Mexico college foundation began without a benefactor but with a lofty goal to build an endowment to serve as a permanent investment in the Espanola valley's future; and

     WHEREAS, northern New Mexico college foundation staff worked with the board of directors to grow the endowment to a present-day total of over three million dollars ($3,000,000); and

     WHEREAS, the northern New Mexico college foundation continues to fulfill its mission with community partners who share the vision and commitment and to increase, manage and distribute resources for the benefit of the students, community and the college; and

     WHEREAS, the northern New Mexico college foundation manages an endowment of over three million two hundred thousand dollars ($3,200,000); and

     WHEREAS, the northern New Mexico college foundation hosts over sixty scholarship funds, and in twenty years, the foundation has given out more than one million two hundred thousand dollars ($1,200,000) in scholarship awards to students pursuing a degree at northern New Mexico college; and

     WHEREAS, more than one thousand three hundred students have been supported since 1996, and in 2015, one hundred twenty-five thousand dollars ($125,000) was available to grant; and

     WHEREAS, the northern New Mexico college foundation celebrated twenty years of philanthropy in the Espanola valley at the "Annual Northern Foundation Gala: Twenty Years in the Heart of the Valley";

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the northern New Mexico college foundation be recognized for the enduring role it plays in providing educational opportunities to northern New Mexicans and the many students who relocate to the region to pursue a college degree; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that February 11, 2016 be designated "Northern New Mexico College Foundation Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the board of directors of the northern New Mexico college foundation and to the president and the members of the board of regents of northern New Mexico college.
