A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO PRESIDENT DAVID SCHMIDLY.
WHEREAS, David J. Schmidly has spent more than forty years of his life in higher education and in the service of advancing knowledge; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Schmidly is a noted scientific naturalist and mammalogist who has authored nine books on natural history and conservation and more than one hundred scientific articles; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Schmidly has served in higher education administration for many years, serving as president of Texas tech university and Oklahoma state university; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Schmidly became the twentieth president of the university of New Mexico on June 1, 2007; and
WHEREAS, in his five years as university of New Mexico president, Dr. Schmidly has been a tireless advocate for students, making their success his top priority; and
WHEREAS, President Schmidly has championed excellence in faculty research, community engagement and healthy communities; and
WHEREAS, President Schmidly has always stressed the "student" in student-athlete, celebrating Lobo athletes' academic success as well as their athletic success; and
WHEREAS, President Schmidly, working in concert with faculty, staff, students and the board of regents, guided the university of New Mexico through the recent years of economic difficulty by keeping its core mission and work force intact; and
WHEREAS, President Schmidly, upon fulfilling his five-year commitment as university of New Mexico president in May 2012, plans to return to the faculty to teach, do research and write books;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that David J. Schmidly of the university of New Mexico be recognized and commended for his service to the university and to the state of New Mexico.
