A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE APPROPRIATE COMMITTEE OF THE LEGISLATURE TO ASSESS OPTIONS FOR PROVIDING EMERGENCY WATER SUPPLIES FOR COMMUNITIES THAT EXPERIENCE ACUTE WATER SHORTAGES.
WHEREAS, New Mexico is located in the great American southwestern desert; and
WHEREAS, at any given time in history, some part of the state will be experiencing severe drought; and
WHEREAS, any community may find itself experiencing severe water shortage due to drought, contamination, watershed damage from wildfires or infrastructure failures; and
WHEREAS, such water shortages threaten the economy and the public health, safety and welfare and may be beyond the capacity of individual water authorities or local governments to address;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council be requested to direct the appropriate committee to review the state's options to respond to emergency water shortage conditions in communities in need; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the co-chairs of the New Mexico legislative council.
