A JOINT MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 5, 2010 AS "VIRTUAL ENLACE NEW MEXICO DAY" AT THE LEGISLATURE.

 

     WHEREAS, New Mexico has a rich multicultural heritage that is rooted in its unique history, geography and relations among its people with different identities, varying languages and diverse narratives; and

     WHEREAS, because of this heritage, the state is committed to providing access to quality education for all students and their families, from pre-kindergarten through doctoral studies; and

     WHEREAS, "Engaging Latino Communities for Education", more popularly known as ENLACE New Mexico, has been a vital partner in that endeavor for nine years; and

     WHEREAS, ENLACE has done a remarkable job in establishing community and institutional partnerships that prepare students for success in all academic and vocational professions; and

     WHEREAS, ENLACE New Mexico believes in inclusivity as well as the need for a multicultural/multilinguistic-focused educational initiative to create a world-class educational system for all students in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the work of ENLACE recognizes, validates and embraces the core cultural values of its stakeholders, namely the strength of familia, the bonds of comunidad and the mutuality of respeto; and

     WHEREAS, ENLACE New Mexico supports grassroots change in the state, with students, families and communities defining the programmatic and policy issues necessary to effect systemic change; and

     WHEREAS, elected officials throughout the state have united in a bipartisan effort to support the continuation and expansion of the ENLACE New Mexico mission; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico legislature has shown its commitment to education through its support of programs such as ENLACE New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, ENLACE New Mexico recognizes, acknowledges and understands that an economic crisis of historic proportions is affecting our state and our country and thus the need to cut the costs associated with travel to the New Mexico state legislature for ENLACE day; and

     WHEREAS, ENLACE New Mexico, as one of the leading educational-system reform advocates in the state, strives to promote technology in the classroom as a tool for academic success;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 5, 2010 be recognized as "Virtual ENLACE New Mexico Day" at the legislature and that recognition be extended to ENLACE New Mexico for increasing opportunities for academic achievement, school completion and success in higher education, not only for Latino students but for all students in New Mexico; and

      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the various regions of ENLACE New Mexico in the state.
