A JOINT MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE REGULATION AND LICENSING DEPARTMENT TO DEVELOP A BILL TO PROVIDE FOR THE REGULATION OF THE ELEVATOR INDUSTRY TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION FOR THE PUBLIC.
WHEREAS, building codes provide for the installation of elevators to provide for the safety of the public; and
WHEREAS, continuing safe operations and maintenance of elevators are not provided for by state inspection; and
WHEREAS, other states have enacted regular elevator inspection and operation and maintenance safety rules;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the regulation and licensing department, in consultation with the national elevator industry and the international union of elevator constructors, be requested to develop a bill to provide for the regulation of the elevator industry to protect the public; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the regulation and licensing department report its findings and recommendations for legislation to the appropriate interim legislative committee by December 1, 2010; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the superintendent of regulation and licensing.
