A MEMORIAL
PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 1, 2010 TO BE "LAS CRUCES DAY" AT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, Las Cruces is the second-largest and one of the fastest-growing cities in New Mexico and is a dynamic place to work, live, play and learn; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces will better serve its residents in 2010 with a new, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient city hall, convention center and federal building and will continue to evolve as a sustainable community; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces is bordered by the purple Organ mountains and the lush, agriculture-filled Mesilla valley; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces will serve as a recreational hub for Dona Ana county with the soon-to-open regional recreation and aquatics center and the thrill of minor league baseball; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces proudly supports America's military with its close association with White Sands missile range, Holloman air force base and Fort Bliss in neighboring El Paso, Texas; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces is on the cutting edge of higher learning with New Mexico state university and Dona Ana community college and with a new high school, middle school and elementary school scheduled for opening this year; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces is playing an integral part in the establishment of spaceport America, the world's first purpose-built, commercial spaceport located just outside of "the city of the crosses"; and
WHEREAS, the city is becoming a leader in the emerging alternative energy sector with new solar and biofuel industries in the West Mesa industrial park; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces is nationally recognized as a "playful city USA", one of Inc. Magazine's boomtowns, one of the American association of retired person's dream towns in which to retire, one of Money Magazine's best college towns in which to retire, one of Family Digest's best place to live designations, one of Forbes/Milken Institute's best small areas for business and career designations and a top ten city for Hispanics to live designation; and
WHEREAS, 2010 is the twenty-third year of "Las Cruces Day" in Santa Fe; and
WHEREAS, Las Cruces has historic roots on the Camino Real and a rich history of farming and feeding the nation with pecans, dairy products and the unbeatable Mesilla valley chile;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 1, 2010 be designated as "Las Cruces Day" at the New Mexico house of representatives to honor and showcase the many facets of the city of Las Cruces; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the mayor and city council of the city of Las Cruces.
