A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE CULTURAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF DESIGNATING THE TUCUMCARI RAILROAD DEPOT AS THE STATE RAILROAD MUSEUM.

     WHEREAS, the Tucumcari railroad depot was built in 1926 and is the only original Spanish architecture railroad depot in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the city of Tucumcari has approved the use of state economic development funds for restoring the railroad depot; and

     WHEREAS, Tucumcari and Quay county have a long history of railroad activity, stretching back to the days when Tucumcari was known as "Six Shooter Siding"; and

     WHEREAS, the contributions of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads are not highlighted in any other museum in New Mexico;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the cultural affairs department be requested to study the feasibility of designating the Tucumcari railroad depot as the state railroad museum; and
