FOR THE LEGISLATIVE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE

 

AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO EXPAND PRIMARY CARE TRAINING AND THE PRIMARY CARE WORKFORCE THROUGHOUT NEW MEXICO.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--

          A. One million eight hundred twenty-five thousand dollars ($1,825,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the following for expenditure in fiscal year 2010 to fund primary care training and the expansion of the primary care workforce:

                (1) the board of regents of the university of New Mexico in the following amounts:

                     (a) six hundred thousand dollars ($600,000) to expand the number of rural community rotations and the number of residents in the family medicine residency programs;

                     (b) three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) to expand by fifty percent the number of physician assistants and family nurse practitioners trained at the university of New Mexico health sciences center; and

                     (c) two hundred twenty-five thousand dollars ($225,000) to expand the number of rural community rotations and the number of residents in pediatric, internal medicine and psychiatry residency programs; and

                (2) the department of health, pursuant to the Rural Primary Health Care Act, in the following amounts:

                     (a) four hundred thousand dollars ($400,000) to contract with the university of New Mexico health sciences center to create a division of workforce development; and

                     (b) three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) to provide rural-based faculty to teach primary health care professional students and residents in their practices.

          B. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2010 shall revert to the general fund.
