A MEMORIAL

DECLARING WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008, "LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS DAY" AT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, the league of united Latin American citizens (LULAC) is the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, LULAC was founded on February 17, 1929 and is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary; and

     WHEREAS, LULAC works to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than seven hundred LULAC councils nationwide; and

     WHEREAS, LULAC councils provide more than one million dollars ($1,000,000) in scholarships to Hispanic students each year, conduct citizenship and voter registration drives, develop low-income housing units, conduct youth leadership training programs and seek to empower the Hispanic community at the local, state and national levels; and

     WHEREAS, LULAC's national educational service centers provide counseling services to more than eighteen thousand Hispanic students per year at sixteen regional centers; and

     WHEREAS, LULAC also provides job-skills and literacy training to the Hispanic community through more than forty-eight employment training centers located throughout the United States; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico is proud to recognize Jessica Martinez, a resident of Las Cruces, who was elected LULAC's national youth president on July 14, 2007 and has served with distinction; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Martinez also serves as the student body president for Mayfield high school in Dona Ana county; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico is also very honored to recognize Paul Martinez, president of LULAC New Mexico and father of LULAC's national youth president Jessica Martinez; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Martinez has served LULAC and the state of New Mexico with the highest commitment and dedication for many years, enriching the lives of countless New Mexicans and advancing the issues and needs of the Hispanic community;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the invaluable contributions of LULAC and LULAC youth be recognized and that Wednesday, February 6, 2008, be declared "League of United Latin American Citizens Day" at the house of representatives.
