AN ACT
RELATING TO PUBLIC SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION; PROVIDING FOR A MINIMUM SALARY FOR SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. A new section of Chapter 22, Article 16 NMSA 1978 is enacted to read:
"[NEW MATERIAL] SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS--MINIMUM SALARY--ON-CALL.--The minimum salary for school bus drivers, including drivers who are on call for driving during a school day, shall be eighty dollars ($80.00) per day."
Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Nine million four hundred forty-three thousand three hundred fifty dollars ($9,443,350) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal year 2008 to provide a minimum salary for school bus drivers. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2008 shall revert to the general fund.
