A JOINT MEMORIAL

ENCOURAGING THE OFFICE OF WORKFORCE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT TO STUDY WORKFORCE EDUCATION TO ENSURE THAT EDUCATIONAL GOALS ARE ALSO EMPLOYMENT-RELATED.

 

     WHEREAS, this state needs an educated workforce in order to move its residents out of poverty; and

     WHEREAS, a public school education does not always translate to appropriate workplace skills; and

     WHEREAS, employment may require applied rather than academic skills, including particular vocational skills, information management, organizational awareness, office routines and workplace communications; and

     WHEREAS, some public assistance clients need specific training in employment-related skills in order to succeed and to remain employed;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the office of workforce training and development be encouraged to focus on providing appropriate workforce training for its clients; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the office of workforce training and development report to the welfare reform oversight committee on the employment-related training programs in place throughout the state by October 2006; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the office of workforce training and development be encouraged to expand the focus of training programs to include more emphasis on particular employment-related skills; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the executive director of the office of workforce training and development.
