AN ACT
RELATING TO EDUCATION; PROVIDING FOR A STATEWIDE HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM EDUCATION INITIATIVE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM EDUCATION INITIATIVE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS--EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY.--Eastern New Mexico university shall conduct an industry-recognized certification program in hospitality and tourism education for high school students throughout the state. The program shall teach the culinary and management skills necessary for a career in the restaurant, food service and lodging industries and shall include a two-year curriculum requiring students to meet certain academic standards and industry-related competencies and to participate in at least four hundred hours of mentored work experience. The program shall include customer relations, preparing and serving safe food, culinary basics, hospitality business mathematics, menu planning, marketing, purchasing and inventory control, as well as the history of the lodging and food service industries and the role of tourism and lodging industries in the state and national economies.
Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--One hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of eastern New Mexico university for expenditure in fiscal year 2007 to implement a statewide hospitality and tourism education initiative in public schools throughout the state. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2007 shall revert to the general fund.
