A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION'S MUSEUM ON MAIN STREET TRAVELING EXHIBITION "YESTERDAY'S TOMORROWS: PAST VISIONS OF THE AMERICAN FUTURE".

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico endowment for the humanities and the museum of New Mexico's traveling exhibition services are collaborating with the Smithsonian institution's museum on main street to sponsor a traveling exhibition; and

     WHEREAS, the exhibition will arrive in New Mexico for an opening at the Deming Luna Mimbres museum on February 27, 2004; and

     WHEREAS, the exhibition will travel to openings in Lovington at the Lea county museum, in Clayton at the Herzstein museum, in Aztec at the Aztec museum and pioneer village, in Tucumcari at the Tucumcari historical museum and in Gallup at the Red Rock museum; and

     WHEREAS, this collaborative project will assist these museums and their staffs and volunteers to host and design programs for this exhibition and for similar exhibitions in the future; and

     WHEREAS, this project will build and solidify relationships and collaborations between communities in eastern New Mexico and communities in the western part of the state; and

     WHEREAS, the exhibition "Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future" will help New Mexicans reflect on how technology, invention and innovation have shaped the twentieth century and will guide our decision-making in the twenty-first century;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Smithsonian institution's museum on main street exhibition "Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future" be recognized as a vital cultural resource and an opportunity for New Mexicans to reflect on the lessons learned from the twentieth century so that they may envision and plan for the communities and lifestyles of the twenty-first century; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico endowment for the humanities and the museum of New Mexico's traveling exhibition services.
