A JOINT MEMORIAL
REQUESTING LEGISLATION TO PRESERVE UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 60 AND TO DESIGNATE THAT HIGHWAY AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC HIGHWAY.
WHEREAS, United States highway 60 was one of the original highways commissioned in 1926; and
WHEREAS, United States highway 60 was built as a transcontinental highway beginning in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and ending in Los Angeles, California; and
WHEREAS, United States highway 60 also passes through West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona; and
WHEREAS, United States highway 60 was originally known as the "ocean-to-ocean highway"; and
WHEREAS, for over eighty years, United States highway 60 was used as a key route facilitating trade and commerce; and
WHEREAS, most of United States highway 60 still remains intact; and
WHEREAS, United States highway 60 is an important part of the history of the United States; and
WHEREAS, it is important for the federal government to preserve that piece of United States history; and
WHEREAS, federal preservation of the highway will also preserve communities along the highway;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that congress be requested to enact and the president be requested to sign legislation that would authorize the secretary of the interior to develop a program of technical assistance and grants for the preservation of United States highway 60 and to designate that highway as a national historic highway; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the president and vice president of the United States, the speaker of the United States house of representatives, the majority leader of the United States senate and the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation.
