RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO OF F. CHRIS GARCIA.
WHEREAS, F. Chris Garcia began his career as an educator in the summer of 1962 as an instructor and discussion leader at the United States peace corps training center at the university of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, F. Chris Garcia's devotion to teaching continued at Fullerton junior college in California, the university of California at Davis, Indiana university, California state university and the university of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, while at the university of New Mexico, F. Chris Garcia served as a visiting associate professor, assistant professor, associate professor, professor, assistant director of the division of government research, assistant dean, associate dean and dean of the college of arts and sciences, vice president for academic affairs and provost and vice president for academic affairs before being named president in August 2002, becoming the university of New Mexico's first Hispanic president; and
WHEREAS, Professor Garcia has been an astute and responsible observer, educator and commentator of and on political behavior and American government for decades; and
WHEREAS, Professor Garcia has served as the vice president of the American political science association and has served on numerous committees of that association; as president of the western political science association; and as a member of the executive committee of the western social science association; and
WHEREAS, Professor Garcia currently serves on the editorial board of Social Science Quarterly and has served on the editorial board of Political Research Quarterly; and
WHEREAS, F. Chris Garcia has continued his commitment to public service by accepting an appointment to serve as a member of the board of directors of the national Hispanic cultural center of New Mexico;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that F. Chris Garcia's contributions to the people of the state of New Mexico be recognized and that he be thanked for his public service; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to F. Chris Garcia.
