REQUESTING NEW MEXICO'S CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO AMEND CURRENT FEDERAL LAW SO THAT THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO MAY ALLOW A PRIVATE BUSINESS TO OPERATE GAS STATION SERVICES AT A SAFETY REST AREA IF THE PRIVATE BUSINESS AGREES TO MAINTAIN THE SAFETY REST AREA.
WHEREAS, the state of New Mexico must look for new and creative ways to save the taxpayer's money; and
WHEREAS, the state currently spends the taxpayer's money from the general fund to maintain safety rest areas along its roadways; and
WHEREAS, many private businesses wish to operate gas station services at these safety rest areas in exchange for the responsibility of maintaining the safety rest areas; and
WHEREAS, federal law currently does not allow the state to make such an arrangement with a private business;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico congressional delegation be requested to introduce legislation to amend current federal law so that the state may allow a private business to operate gas station services at a safety rest area if the private business agrees to maintain the safety rest area; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation and the secretary of highway and transportation.
