SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 100 resolves the legislature recognizes the work of the Las Vegas veterans committee to preserve and restore the “old armory building” and convert it the Las Vegas armory center. The Las Vegas veterans committee is to work with the New Mexico congressional delegation, VSC and an appropriated interim legislative committee and the Legislative Finance Committee to complete, by October 31, 2003, a study to obtain funds to make the Las Vegas armory center a reality.

Significant Issues

The Las Vegas “old armory building” has a long history and has served individuals who have participated in military service. It is both historically significant and reflective of the honored military service performed by New Mexicans. The community of Las Vegas voted to preserve the old armory and create the Las Vegas veterans center to serve the needs of northern New Mexico.

DMA states the building was deeded to Luna Vocational Technical Institute and is no longer belongs to the State Armory Board and the agency supports the memorial.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

There will be undetermined costs in renovation and maintenance of the facility.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

VSC will have to convene a working group of state agencies to determine funding for this project.
