SUMMARY

     Synopsis of Bill

HJM 71 requests that the State Highway and Transportation Department, the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration be requested to resume a study of alternative alignments for New Mexico state road 50 through Glorieta Battlefield.

HJM 71 further requests that the agencies seek funding for the study from sources beyond the state’s allocation of federal highway funds.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The State Highway and Transportation Department states that realignment of New Mexico 50 in order to avoid the Glorieta Battlefield would require changing most of the roadway alignment between Glorieta and Pecos. There are numerous landowners along the route and right of way issues may be contentious. Preliminary cost estimates for the design and construction of a new alignment around the battlefield are on the order of  $15 million.
