RECOGNIZING THE NEED TO RESTORE CEMETERIES AT THE LAS VEGAS MEDICAL CENTER.
WHEREAS, respect and dignity are of the utmost importance to everyone and begin when we respect each other in life and in death; and
WHEREAS, without laying blame, there has been a neglect of state hospital cemeteries, including at the Las Vegas medical center; and
WHEREAS, the administration of the Las Vegas medical center is committed to working with the families, consumers and other stakeholders who share an interest in the restoration of its cemeteries and preservation of the dignity of those who are interred there;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it recognizes, and that the governor be requested to recognize, the cemeteries at the Las Vegas medical center as sacred places that deserve proper care; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature and the governor seek ways to support the efforts of the Las Vegas medical center and the state hospital patient cemetery restoration project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the office of the governor.
