REQUESTING THE SECRETARY OF PUBLIC SAFETY TO UPHOLD THE AUTONOMY OF THE MOTOR TRANSPORTATION DIVISION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, DEFINE THE MOTOR TRANSPORTATION DIVISION'S FUNCTION AND PRESENT A CURRENT ASSESSMENT OF THE MOTOR TRANSPORTATION DIVISION ALONG WITH FUTURE NEEDS AND REVENUE POTENTIAL TO THE LEGISLATIVE FINANCE COMMITTEE DURING THE UPCOMING LEGISLATIVE INTERIM.
WHEREAS, the motor transportation division of the department of public safety is responsible for the safety of all large commercial vehicles on New Mexico roads; and
WHEREAS, the motor transportation division has a force of over one hundred twenty-eight highly trained officers patrolling every roadway in New Mexico to enforce safe transportation; and
WHEREAS, the motor transportation division is both willing and available to back up the state police in times of emergency; and
WHEREAS, the motor transportation division has been successful in the recruitment and training of officers, only to lose these officers to numerous other factions of public safety, including national, state, county and city departments;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the secretary of public safety be requested to uphold the autonomy of the motor transportation division; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the secretary of public safety be requested to define the motor transportation division's function and present a current assessment of the division along with future needs and revenue potential to the legislative finance committee during the upcoming legislative interim; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the chair and director of the legislative finance committee and the secretary of public safety.
