REQUESTING STATE AGENCIES' COOPERATION IN THE CREATION OF THE EL CAMINO REAL DE TIERRA ADENTRO NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL.
WHEREAS, American Indians established routes for trade and communication, one of which followed the route that became known as El Camino Real; and
WHEREAS, El Camino Real became significant historically between 1598 and 1882, linking Mexico City, Mexico, with San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, the National Trails System Act provides for the protection of historic trails through identification of significant and important features; and
WHEREAS, the federal bureau of land management and the national park service will jointly administer the proposed El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro national historic trail; and
WHEREAS, technical assistance, planning, design, preservation and financial support may be available to develop interpretive media and to protect significant trail resources for landowners who voluntarily seek certification by and enter into an agreement with El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro administration;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state highway and transportation department, the energy, minerals and natural resources department, the economic development department and the state land office be requested to cooperate with the federal bureau of land management and the national park service in the development and certification of properties for the creation of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro national historic trail; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretaries of highway and transportation, energy, minerals and natural resources and economic development and to the commissioner of public lands.
