CONGRATULATING MARTA STRZYZEWSKI AS MISS NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, the Miss America program exists to provide personal and professional opportunities for young American women and to promote their voices in culture, politics and the community; and
WHEREAS, competition in the Miss America program requires enormous personal commitment, hard work and talent; and
WHEREAS, thousands of volunteers organize the local and state competitions, promoting community involvement throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, ten thousand women participate each year in local and state events; and
WHEREAS, state titleholders become representatives of their generation and use their stature to address community service organizations, business and civic leaders, the media and others about their platform issues; and
WHEREAS, Marta Strzyzewski and her family were forced to flee their native Poland and its former Communist regime and enter the United States as refugees; and
WHEREAS, Marta Strzyzewski became an accomplished pianist while in school in Roswell, graduated from Roswell high school with honors, obtained a full scholarship to New Mexico military institute's junior college program from which she graduated with honors, and with the help of scholarships and work-study programs at the university of New Mexico, graduated in May 2001 with a degree in biology and a minor in music; and
WHEREAS, Marta Strzyzewski, a resident of Roswell, was crowned Miss New Mexico in Roswell in June 2001 and will compete in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City on September 22, 2001;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Marta Strzyzewski be congratulated for winning the title of Miss New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Marta Strzyzewski.
