SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

SJM4 requests for the Corrections Department (CD) to develop fair and respectful policies for visitation between inmates and their families.

Significant Issues

SJM4 further requires that the CD collaborate with an advisory group comprised of representatives from inmates' families, the CD, and two additional members agreed on by the other representatives. The advisory group is to meet at least once a month during the 2001 interim period to develop visitation policies. The CD and the advisory group are to report to the Corrections Oversight Committee no later than October 2001 regarding the development of the visitation policies.

A copy of the Senate Joint Memorial is to be transmitted to the Secretary of Corrections.

PERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONS

SJM4 does not include references to performance measures that could be used to assess the effectiveness of the policies.
