SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 255 appropriates $196.0 from the general fund to New Mexico Military Institute to support the women's volleyball team.
Significant Issues
According to CHE, the institution requested funding for this purpose to help achieve gender equity in athletics. When an institution is out of compliance with Title IX, the institution must increase the number of women's sports or decrease the number of men's sports offered to achieve gender equity. According to NMMI, the women's volleyball program would not be able to generate sufficient revenues to cover the costs.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $196.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
CONFLICT/DUPLICATION/COMPANIONSHIP/RELATIONSHIP
Included in CS HB2, Section 4, is a general fund appropriation to NMMI in the amount of $150.0 for the women's volleyball program.
