SUMMARY
Synopsis of HJC Amendment
House Judiciary Committee amendment HJM 45 by changing one of the recipients of copies of the memorial from the "office of the federal survey general", to the "general accounting office".
Synopsis of Original Bill
HJM 45 requests the US Congress to provide access to records of New Mexico and southern Colorado land grants.
Significant Issues
A significant discrepancy exist regarding the number of land grants in New Mexico and southern Colorado. Providing access to the archives may resolve the questions concerning an estimated 719 land grants which remain unaccounted for, despite evidence of their existence.
Clarifying the historic record would bring understanding regarding ancestral properties. New findings would bring accuracy to the debate of potential injustices regarding ancestral properties.
New findings could be a basis for potential displacement of current landholders.
