Synopsis of Bill



House Bill 702 requires the Secretary of State to develop an official registry of existing community land grants in New Mexico.



Significant Issues



Community land grants have existed in New Mexico since the early sixteenth century and the only complete official registry of the land grants is with the federal government. Because nearly all the remaining community land grants are located in New Mexico, the bill calls for a state registry of land grants.



FISCAL IMPLICATIONS



The bill does not contain an appropriation or any significant fiscal implications.



RELATIONSHIP



House Bill 702 relates to House Joint Memorial 28 which request the Secretary of State to develop a community land grants registry.
