SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

HB 519 appropriates $150,000 from the general fund for expenditure in FY 2001 and 2002 to the State Agency on Aging for the purpose of developing and disseminating information to senior citizens and health care providers regarding ways to order prescription drugs from Canada or Mexico. HB 519 has an emergency clause.

Significant Issues

The Agency on Aging will use the appropriation to publicize information about mail order options at significantly reduced prices.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

HB519 appropriates $150.0 from the general fund to the agency in FY01 and FY02. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY02 shall revert to the general fund.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

An educational campaign will require the participation of the AOA staff and additional contracted services. The $100,000 appropriation will allow the AOA to contract out much of the work necessary to accomplish the goals of HB 519 with existing AOA staff overseeing the program.
