SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 69 appropriates $500.0 from the general fund to the Tourism Department for the purpose of joining the states of Colorado, Utah and Arizona in matching federal funds to develop a visitors interpretive center at the Four Corners Monument in San Juan County. The bill contains an emergency clause.
Significant Issues
U.S. legislation sponsored by Senator Bingaman allocates a $2,000.0 match to fund the center in the four corners area. According to the Office of Indian Affairs, Senator Bingaman's office indicates that New Mexico is the only state that has not contributed its portion of the state matching funds. If New Mexico appropriates the $500.0, the federal dollars can be accessed and the project can begin.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $500.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
