AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR TRAINING TEACHERS TO TEACH AND STUDENTS TO SPEAK LANGUAGES OF TRIBES LOCATED IN NEW MEXICO; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal years 2001 and 2002 to fund programs that train teachers to teach native languages of Indian nations, tribes or pueblos located in New Mexico and to provide classes for teaching students to speak those native tribal languages statewide. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.

Section 2. EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public peace, health and safety that this act take effect immediately.
