RELATING TO LAW ENFORCEMENT; PROVIDING FOR REIMBURSEMENT TO A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY WHEN ONE OF THE AGENCY'S OFFICERS SUCCESSFULLY GRADUATES FROM A CERTIFIED, SATELLITE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING ACADEMY; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. A new section of the Law Enforcement Training Act is enacted to read:
"[NEW MATERIAL] REIMBURSEMENT TO A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY WHEN ONE OF THE AGENCY'S OFFICERS SUCCESSFULLY GRADUATES FROM A CERTIFIED, SATELLITE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING ACADEMY.--
A. The department, through the budget of the training and recruiting division, shall reimburse a law enforcement agency when one of the agency's officers successfully graduates from a certified, satellite law enforcement training academy.
B. The department shall reimburse a law enforcement agency at the rate of three thousand dollars ($3,000) for each officer who successfully graduates from a certified, satellite law enforcement training academy.
C. Upon approval by the director of the New Mexico law enforcement academy, reimbursement payments shall be issued by the department on a quarterly basis and shall be predicated on the number of officers who successfully graduated from a certified, satellite law enforcement training academy during the immediately preceding quarter."
Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Four hundred fifty thousand dollars ($450,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the department of public safety for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 so that the department may reimburse a law enforcement agency when one of the agency's officers successfully graduates from a certified, satellite law enforcement training academy. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund. Section 3. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2001.
