REQUESTING WIDENING OF STATE HIGHWAY 602 BETWEEN GALLUP AND ZUNI TO A FOUR-LANE THOROUGHFARE.
WHEREAS, state highway 602 between Gallup and Zuni in McKinley county is a heavily traveled two-lane road carrying daily commuters and school buses loaded with children; and
WHEREAS, this highway is heavily congested with traffic from dawn to late at night and is in serious disrepair; and
WHEREAS, the current condition of the road combined with its narrow width of only two lanes presents serious and immediate danger to the safety and lives of those who must travel it; and
WHEREAS, steadily increasing tourist traffic unfamiliar with the highway presents additional dangers to both New Mexicans and visitors;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state highway and transportation department be requested to develop and initiate a project to widen the entire length of state highway 602 between Gallup and Zuni to a modern four-lane highway; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be sent to the state highway engineer for presentation to the state highway commission.
