SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

This bill creates the Private Student Tuition Scholarship Act, entitling students receiving elementary or secondary education at home or in a non-public sector to receive an annual tuition scholarship at a state post-secondary institution. The number of annual awards shall be equivalent to the number of years the child was not enrolled in public secondary education. CHE is directed to promulgate rules to implement the Act. The bill appropriates $1,400.0 to CHE to implement the Act.

Significant Issues

According to CHE, students referred to in this bill can already apply for the state's 17 financial aid programs.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $1,400.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY01 shall revert to the general fund.
