44th legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - second session, 2000
REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES POSTMASTER GENERAL AND THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE TO DESIGNATE THE CITY OF RIO RANCHO WITH ITS OWN POST OFFICE, ZIP CODE, POSTMARK AND POSTMASTER.
WHEREAS, the city of Rio Rancho has grown to be New Mexico's fourth largest city; and
WHEREAS, the United States census bureau has certified the current population of Rio Rancho at over 50,000 with population projections of 100,000 by the year 2020; and
WHEREAS, Rio Rancho is no longer a suburb but a growing municipality in its own right and, as a result, has requested the United States postal service to designate Rio Rancho with its own post office, zip code, postmark and postmaster; and
WHEREAS, Rio Rancho did not exist when zip codes were authorized and has, in essence, been an appendage of the Albuquerque post office; and
WHEREAS, the three cities larger than Rio Rancho have their own postal service designation in addition to neighboring communities around Rio Rancho, including Corrales, Placitas and Bernalillo; and
WHEREAS, securing Rio Rancho's postal service designation would improve postal service to the city and the state and assist the postal service in its long-range planning for New Mexico;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the United States postmaster general and the United States postal service be requested to designate the city of Rio Rancho with its own post office, zip code, postmark and postmaster; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the United States postmaster and the New Mexico congressional delegation.
