REQUESTING THE TOURISM DEPARTMENT TO PROMOTE THE TOWN OF ESTANCIA, NEW MEXICO AS THE SITE OF THE NEW MEXICO PUMPKIN HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS KNOWN AS PUMPKIN CHUCKIN'.
WHEREAS, the growing, harvesting and marketing of pumpkins is a developing agricultural industry in the Estancia valley; and
WHEREAS, the annual pumpkin festival has been held in Estancia at the end of October for six consecutive years; and
WHEREAS, the pumpkin hurling championships were conducted in the Estancia region in 1998 and 1999; and
WHEREAS, the art and craft of lifting pumpkins to greater heights has been refined and elevated by the citizens of the Estancia valley; and
WHEREAS, these championships are of significant value to Estancia and the surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, the promoting of the town of Estancia as the New Mexico site of pumpkin hurling championships by the tourism department would create a valuable economic impact on the community of Estancia and its surrounding areas;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the tourism department be requested to promote Estancia, New Mexico as the site of the New Mexico pumpkin hurling championships known as pumpkin chuckin'; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of tourism and the mayor of Estancia for appropriate distribution.
