REQUESTING THAT THE NEW MEXICO VETERANS' SERVICE COMMISSION STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF CONTINUING TO USE FORT STANTON CEMETERY AS A VETERANS CEMETERY.
WHEREAS, Fort Stanton cemetery has been an established veterans cemetery since 1859; and
WHEREAS, Fort Stanton cemetery contains a national monument and more than one thousand five hundred veterans' grave sites; and
WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon our society to honor the veterans who served this nation with honor and love; and
WHEREAS, veterans of military service who fought for the preservation of our liberty, freedom and strength will follow the course of all living things and succumb to the inevitable peace of death;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it request the New Mexico veterans' service commission to study the feasibility of continuing to use Fort Stanton cemetery as a veterans cemetery; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the New Mexico veterans' service commission complete its study no later than October 1, 2000 and report its findings to an appropriate interim legislative committee; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the New Mexico veterans' service commission.
