SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
This bill appropriates $798.8 from the general fund to the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico for the purpose of expanding the College of Nursing instruction and general programs. This bill carries an emergency clause.
Significant Issues
According to the CON, by 2015, there will be a shortage of 114,500 nurses nationwide. The National Advisory Council on Nursing Education and Practice recommended that within 10 years, 66% of registered nurses have a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree; New Mexico currently has 27% of nurses with the BSN. Nationally, 37.4% of schools that limit student enrollment have done so because of faculty shortages.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $798.8 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund for expenditure in fiscal years 2000 and 2001. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY01 shall revert to the general fund.
