Synopsis of Bill
House Joint Memorial 79 requests that the Legislative Education Study Committee and the State Department of Education cooperate in assessing the suitability of the Compulsory School Attendance Law for contemporary society. The results of their findings and recommended changes in the law are to be submitted to the Education Initiatives and Accountability Task Force by November 2000.
Significant Issues
The memorial asks that the LESC and SDE examine a thirty-three (33) year-old law and assess its compatibility with the expectations and needs of twenty-first century society. This approach might be utilized when reviewing other statutes and regulations that govern public education.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
LESC and SDE staffs will implement the provisions of the memorial with existing staff.
