A JOINT RESOLUTION

PROPOSING TO AMEND ARTICLE 2, SECTION 4 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW MEXICO TO PROHIBIT SLAVERY AND INDENTURED SERVITUDE.

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. It is proposed to amend Article 2, Section 4 of the constitution of New Mexico to read:

     "All persons are born equally free and have certain natural, inherent and inalienable rights; among which are the rights of enjoying and defending life and liberty; of acquiring, possessing and protecting property; and of seeking and obtaining safety and happiness. Slavery and involuntary servitude in any form are prohibited."

     SECTION 2. The amendment proposed by this resolution shall be submitted to the people for their approval or rejection at the next general election or at any special election prior to that date that may be called for that purpose.
